UCA Soccer Earns Thrilling 3-2 Comeback Victory Against ULM
Bears win first game of season with pair of one-goal deficit rallies in each half of Sunday’s game against ULM.
CONWAY, Ark. – It took six games and a thrilling comeback for Central Arkansas to pick up its first win of the season 3-2 against Louisiana-Monroe on Sunday.
The Bears (1-5) had to rally from a one-goal deficits in each half against ULM. The Warhawks scored their first goal of the season in the 19th minute and Kelly Van Gundy tied the game just before halftime corralling a loose ball at the top of the 18-yard box and sending the ball into the back of the net. It was Van Gundy’s second goal of the season.
ULM didn’t waste much time retaking the lead in the second half, scoring in the 48th minute of the match. It wouldn’t take long for the Bears, though, to level the score this time.
Sophia Backstrom took a pass from Anna Kerr in the 55th minute and Backstrom struck the ball with the outside of her foot for the goal.
The Bears got a lucky break 10 minutes when ULM was called for a foul inside the 18-yard box, earning the Bears a penalty kick. Lea Duus Madsen easily scored on the PK and gave UCA a 3-2 lead with 25 minutes left to play.
The Warhawks played too desperately after the goal and ULM’s Ally Richardson received a red card leaving the Warhawks with just 10 players for the final 15 minutes. They managed a couple shots in the final minutes, but Kajsa Pruner had no issues stopping those shots.
The Bears will stay at home for its first ASUN match of the season against Queens at 7 p.m. Thursday.
