NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Central Arkansas stepped into Memorial Gymnasium on Saturday and delivered a steady effort against No. 15 Vanderbilt.

The Bears kept the game competitive for long stretches before falling 83-72 in a road matchup that showed clear signs of growth for a young UCA team.

UCA trailed 47-31 at halftime but outscored the Commodores after the break, tightening its defense and finding more rhythm on offense.
It was the type of performance that leaves a coaching staff encouraged about what can come next, even while recognizing the gap that still exists against a top-15 opponent.

Bears coach John Shulman probably saw enough fight to feel optimistic, especially on the defensive end. Vanderbilt entered the game averaging 96 points per outing, but UCA held the Commodores well below that number.

Shulman said his team competed with purpose throughout the day.

Camren Hunter led UCA with 18 points and played with controlled aggression, knocking down three shots from long range and keeping possessions alive with timely rebounds.

Ty Robinson added 14 points and five boards while creating space on drives to the rim. Javion Guy-King delivered 13 points and three steals, giving the Bears a much-needed spark defensively.

Freshman forward Malchiah Marable added eight points and seven rebounds. His presence inside helped the Bears match Vanderbilt’s physicality in stretches, especially as UCA settled into the game.

The Commodores opened with a burst, including a three-pointer from Tyler Nickel just nine seconds into the game.

The early pressure put the Bears behind quickly, but the group settled down and executed better possessions as the half progressed.

The Bears’ improved defense in the second half kept the game within reach, and UCA’s offense responded with stronger possessions and better shot selection.

Vanderbilt still controlled the scoreboard, but the Bears made the Commodores work harder for open looks.

UCA found ways to limit turnovers, crash the boards and contest shots, small details that helped the game trend more evenly as time went on.

Hunter continued to show his leadership as the Bears’ primary scoring option. His steady control of the ball allowed UCA to keep pushing against Vanderbilt’s pressure.

Robinson and Guy-King also found ways to create offense through drives, put-backs and transition chances.

The Bears’ defensive pressure improved after halftime. The group held Vanderbilt to longer possessions and fewer clean shots, which allowed UCA to cut into what had been a growing lead.

UCA returns home on Wednesday for an 11 a.m. matchup against Kansas Christian. The Bears hope to build off the defensive strides made in Nashville while sharpening their offensive consistency.

Shulman said the competition will matter when the Bears move deeper into their schedule.

The Bears may be starting to show their identity defensively. Holding Vanderbilt to 13 points below its average provided evidence that UCA can produce quality stops against a high-level offense.
