UCA knocks off Austin Peay on road behind 34-point night
Javion Guy-King pours in 34 points as UCA earns a 93-88 road win at Governors in ASUN play.
CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. — Central Arkansas picked up a key 93-88 road victory over Austin Peay on Wednesday night at F&M Bank Arena.
UCA improved to 19-11 overall and 14-3 in ASUN play with the win. It marked the most victories in a Division I season for the program and the highest total since 2004-05.
The Bears handed the Governors their first home loss of the season. Austin Peay entered the night at 21-7 overall and 15-2 in conference play.
UCA struck first when Javion Guy-King drilled a three-pointer in the opening minute. The early shot set the tone for an aggressive approach.
The Bears soon faced a surge from the home team. Austin Peay connected from long range and built a 31-19 lead midway through the first half.
UCA needed a response to keep the game within reach. Camren Hunter and Luke Moore helped steady things with baskets late in the half.
The Bears chipped away at the deficit and tightened the score before the break. Their defensive pressure improved during the closing minutes.
UCA trailed 46-44 at halftime after trimming what had been a double-digit gap. The road test was far from over.
Second-half execution makes difference
The Bears opened the second half with better spacing and ball movement. Their shot selection improved quickly.
UCA began finding rhythm from the perimeter. Timely three-pointers shifted momentum.
The Bears leaned on Guy-King, who attacked the rim and finished through contact. He stayed efficient throughout the night.
UCA also received a lift from Ty Robinson. His outside shooting forced the defense to extend.
The Bears continued to respond each time Austin Peay tried to regain control. Composure became a key factor down the stretch.
UCA gained separation when Robinson hit another three with just over two minutes left. The basket stretched the lead at a critical moment.
The Bears pushed ahead by seven in the final seconds after Guy-King converted a layup. That score gave him 34 points, a team and career high.
UCA closed the game at the free-throw line as Hunter knocked down late attempts. The road win was secured, 93-88.
Balanced scoring powers road win
The Bears shot efficiently in the second half and executed in late possessions. Offensive balance carried them through.
UCA saw Guy-King finish 14 of 19 from the field and 6 of 10 from beyond the arc. He also added two steals.
The Bears received 23 points from Robinson, who shot 8 of 11 overall and 6 of 9 from three-point range while grabbing five rebounds.
UCA counted on Hunter for 20 points and steady free-throw shooting, as he went 7 of 8 at the line and added six rebounds and three assists.
The Bears also got nine points, three steals, and three assists from Moore, whose defense created extra opportunities.
UCA now returns home for Senior Day against Queens on Saturday in Conway, looking to carry momentum forward in ASUN play.
