UCA Can’t Complete Comeback in 70-64 ASUN Loss
Central Arkansas erased much of a halftime deficit, but Stetson held on late to secure a 70-64 ASUN victory.
Central Arkansas fought back in the second half but couldn’t overcome a decisive second-quarter stretch, falling 70-64 to Stetson on Saturday in Atlantic Sun Conference play at the Farris Center.
UCA opened the game with early momentum, connecting on perimeter shots to briefly take control before Stetson answered with a run that shifted the tone. The Hatters carried a slim lead out of the first quarter and used the next ten minutes to create separation.
That second quarter proved costly for the Sugar Bears. UCA was limited offensively while Stetson surged to a 27-11 scoring advantage, pushing the margin into double digits by halftime and forcing the Sugar Bears to chase the game from behind.
Coming out of the break, UCA responded with improved execution and energy. the Sugar Bears controlled much of the second half, trimming the deficit by outscoring Stetson across the final two quarters.
Bree Stephens led the Sugar Bears with 15 points, providing steady production as UCA attempted to climb back into the contest. Shae Littleford matched that total with 15 points of her own, helping stabilize the offense during extended possessions.
Cheyanne Kemp added 14 points, giving the Sugar Bears another scoring option as the comeback took shape. UCA shot more efficiently after halftime, finding cleaner looks and converting at a higher rate than it did in the opening half.
Despite the push, Stetson answered each surge with timely baskets and late free throws, preventing the Sugar Bears from closing the gap to a single possession in the final minutes.
UCA showed defensive resilience in the second half, forcing turnovers and limiting second-chance opportunities. the Sugar Bears also stayed competitive on the glass, keeping the contest within reach deep into the fourth quarter.
The loss drops the Sugar Bears to 11-10 overall and 4-5 in ASUN play as the conference schedule continues to tighten.
UCA will now turn its attention to the road, traveling to Queens for a midweek conference matchup scheduled for Wednesday at 6 p.m.
