UCA Sugar Bears against Hendrix in win Monday

CONWAY, Ark. — Be prepared if you’re coming to Central Arkansas’ game with Samford on Friday morning. It will be Elementary Day at the Farris Center and it will sound like a swarm of insects at times at a loud level.

UCA will welcome local elementary students for a battle with the Bulldogs and tip-off is set for 11 a.m.

The Sugar Bears got the season off to a fun start on Monday, defeating Hendrix 104-30. In addition to hitting the century mark for the first time in five seasons, UCA also hit 18 three-pointers, setting a new program record. Six players hit triples, including a game-high five from Cheyanne Kemp. Freshman Jenna Cook opened her career with 14 points, dropping in a pair of three-pointers of her own.

UCA’s depth really showed through on Monday, with ten players scoring, and six players dishing out assists in the win. Five players scored in double-figures, and all 11 players had at least three rebounds or three assists.

Samford opened its season with a 101-53 loss at Tennessee, falling to the Lady Vols in Knoxville. Emily Bowman recorded a double-double, scoring 12 points and pulling down 11 rebounds. Three other Bulldogs scored in double-figures, led by freshman guard Claire Johnson’s 13.

The Sugar Bears and Bulldogs played last season, the only meeting between the teams, with Central Arkansas falling 65-62. Samford needed every one of its 41 free throw attempts to hold on for the win, compared to 17 for the Sugar Bears. Leah Mafua led the team with 15 points in last season’s matchup.

Tipoff against the Bulldogs is set for 11 a.m. The game will be streamed on ESPN+, with live stats available online.
