FORT MYERS, Fla. – Central Arkansas’ women’s soccer team had a chance to challenge for the top-spot in the ASUN Championship tournament but fell 2-1 to Florida Gulf Coast on Sunday.

It was the first conference loss of the season for the Bears (8-6-2, 7-1-2 ASUN) and UCA is now two points behind FGCU in the conference standings. However, UCA is still in position to earn a direct spot to the tournament’s semifinal round.

UCA struck first against FGCU Brianna Lopez scoring her third goal of the season in the 11th minute of Sunday’s match. Both sides kept attacking each other’s goal without much luck until FGCU scored on a penalty kick in the 26th minute, tying the match 1-1.

FGCU would score the game-winning goal midway through the second half. FGCU wound up out-shooting the Bears 25-8, including 11-5 in shots on goal.

UCA will cap off the regular season next Saturday when the Bears travel to North Alabama for a 1 p.m. kickoff.

The 2024 ASUN Women’s Soccer Championship is set to begin October 31 with the first round with two games between the bottom four seeds. The other four get bye to the quarterfinal (Nos. 3 and 4) and semifinal rounds (Nos. 1 and 2). The quarterfinals will take place November 3, semifinals on November 7 and the final will be played November 10.

FGCU, UCA, Lipscomb, Eastern Kentucky, North Florida, Austin Peay and Bellarmine have already clinched seven of the eights spots in the tournament.
