Ella Chaney Kwik Star Klassic honor caps rough day for UCA at Iowa

CORALVILLE, Iowa — Ella Chaney didn’t leave Iowa empty-handed.

The Central Arkansas outside hitter was picked for the 2026 Kwik Star Klassic All-Tournament Team on Sunday.

She piled up 33 kills over the weekend and hit .360.

The redshirt junior also had 26 digs, six blocks and two aces.

Her best day came Friday against Texas Tech.

That’s when she posted a double-double with a career-high 14 kills and 12 digs.

The honor was the bright spot on a tough Sunday for UCA.

Iowa takes control at the net

Iowa (10-3) swept the Bears (0-10) at Xtream Arena in the final nonconference match of the season.

The set scores were 25-12, 25-15 and 25-14.

The Hawkeyes hit .330 for the match. UCA hit just .059.

Iowa had 43 kills. The Bears had 26.

The home team also won the serving battle with eight aces to none.

It outblocked UCA 11-4, too.

Hitting errors didn’t help. The Bears had 20 of them to Iowa’s 12.

A good start fades in the third set

The last set began the right way.

McKinzee Haas and Sarah Carnathan opened it with kills.

Iowa answered with a 7-1 run and grabbed a 7-3 lead.

UCA kept swinging. Chaney and Greyson Button each added a kill.

Blocks came from Karlyn Frazier, Tatelyn Brandsma, Button and Chaney.

It wasn’t enough. Iowa held its cushion and closed out the sweep 25-14.

The first two sets slip away

The second set started closer.

Nicole Sargent’s kill tied it 2-2 for the Bears.

Iowa then went on a 5-1 run and never looked back.

Haas and Chaney had three kills apiece in that set. Brandsma set up several of the attacks.

The Hawkeyes won the last four points to take it 25-15.

The opener was even tougher. Iowa jumped ahead 8-3 and later led 16-7.

Carnathan, Chaney and Haas all found kills to slow Iowa down. Brandsma and Frazier teamed up on an early block.

Carnathan’s kill was the last point UCA scored in that 25-12 set.

Team leaders and what’s next

Chaney and Haas tied for the team lead with seven kills each.

Haas hit .308. Chaney chipped in seven digs and a block.

Brandsma handed out 19 assists and added two kills and two blocks.

She also tied Olivia Kremer for the team lead with eight digs. Kremer had three assists.

Carnathan finished with six kills.

The Bears finally get a match at home next.

They’ll open the Prince Center schedule against Eastern Kentucky on Thursday, Sept. 24, at 6 p.m.

Ten matches in, UCA is still hunting for its first win.
