UCA women’s golf climbs to seventh at Sunflower Invitational in Kansas
Emma Leroy Fabry tied for 10th as the Bears moved up two spots over three rounds at Lawrence Country Club.
Central Arkansas was ninth after 18 holes in Lawrence, Kan.
They didn’t finish there.
UCA women’s golf picked up one spot in the second round and one more in the third to finish seventh at the Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational on Tuesday.
Fourteen teams and 71 golfers were in the field at Lawrence Country Club, so seventh is the last spot in the top half.
Emma Leroy Fabry beat most of those golfers. She tied for 10th at 11 over par.
Her tournament turned on one round. She opened at 6 over, then came back with a 1 over. Nobody else in the Bears lineup shot better than 4 over in any round.
She closed with a 4 over Tuesday.
That middle round was five shots better than the one before it, and she played them both on the same day. Golf’s a strange game.
Leroy Fabry was the only UCA golfer inside the top 10.
Huett finishes with her low round
Maggie Huett had the other good Tuesday. She shot 4 over in the final round after going 7 over and 8 over on Monday.
That left her at 19 over, fourth on the team.
Alethea Paige Gaccion was the second Bears scorer at 16 over. Her card read 6 over, 4 over and 6 over.
Gudrun Thorsteinsdottir was two shots behind her at 18 over. She had the team’s best first round at 5 over, then went 6 over and 7 over.
Her scores went the wrong direction each round, but only by a shot at a time.
Nanami Hayakawa finished at 28 over. She was 13 over through two rounds before a 15 over on Tuesday. It was the high round of the tournament for the lineup.
Put Leroy Fabry and Huett together and UCA got two rounds of 4 over on the last day. The other three added up to 28 over.
Where the strokes came from
The par 3s worked. The Bears averaged 3.2 strokes on them, third best in the field.
Par 5s were fine too at 5.22, which ranked fifth.
Par 4s were another story. UCA averaged 4.42 and tied for ninth.
Add it all up and you get 147 pars and 22 birdies over three rounds from five golfers.
Host Kansas won at 6 over, so nobody in the field broke par as a team.
It was a stroke play event with 36 holes Monday and 18 on Tuesday.
The Bears get less than a week before the next one. They play the Lady Red Wolves Classic in Jonesboro, Ark., on Oct. 12-13.
