Bears’ Will McElvain picks up league honor
Huge fourth-quarter effort in win over SEMO getting quarterback weekly honors.
CONWAY, Ark. — Central Arkansas quarterback Will McElvain was named the UAC Offensive Player of the Week on Monday after engineering one of the best fourth-quarter comebacks in school history on Saturday.
The No. 23 Bears, down 30-6 entering the fourth quarter against Southeast Missouri, outscored the Redhawks 32-3 in the final 15 minutes, scoring touchdowns on five consecutive possessions, to earn a 38-33 victory at First Security Field at Estes Stadium.
McElvain tossed four touchdown passes in the final quarter, of 10 yards to Myles Butler, 9 yards to Jarrod Barnes, 73 yards to Christian Richmond and 45 yards to Butler again. For the game, McElvain completed 31 of 44 passes (70.4 percent) for a career-high 397 yards. He also rushed four times for 17 yards as the Bears improved to 4-2 overall with the victory.
For the season, McElvain has completed 130 of 197 passes for 1,488 yards, with 14 touchdowns and three interceptions. His 14 touchdowns is tied for third in the nation at the FCS level.
The Bears are at home again Saturday, hosting Stephen F. Austin at 4 p.m. on “The Stripes” on Hall of Fame Weekend.
